As part of our high school diploma program, specializing in Film and Audiovisual Studies, we created the short film "Interview" as a group project. The goal of this project was to conceive a complete work of fiction, from writing the script to directing, including staging and editing.
The film tells the story of a professor who has lost all sense of purpose and passion in his profession. Through a conversation with his conscience, embodied by a doppelganger of himself, he questions his life choices and decides to interview at a temporary employment agency. This encounter marks the beginning of an inner journey that will lead him to reconsider his calling and rediscover his passion for teaching.
The narrative revolves around several key figures: the professor, his personified conscience, the deliberately obnoxious HR manager, and a former student. The confrontation with the HR manager embodies the harshness of the professional world, while the former student plays a revealing role by reminding the professor of the positive impact he had on his students. These interactions structure the psychological development of the main character.
Specific work was done on the color scheme to visually convey the tensions of the narrative. A cool color palette was associated with the professor and his conscience, symbolizing doubt and a loss of meaning, while a warmer color scheme was assigned to the HR manager, emphasizing his role as the antagonist. The editing also allows the professor and his conscience to coexist in the same shot, creating a visual doubling effect that serves the narrative.
This project allowed me to develop skills in fiction filmmaking, teamwork, and directing. It also enabled me to understand how aesthetic choices (color, framing, editing) can serve the narrative and reflect a character's inner development.
